PASSING GAME WITH A CENTRE
interpretive-instructional collages by Antoaneta Quick

May 15–20

Years ago, in the abandoned school of the village where I spent my childhood summers, I found a pile of shabby treasures, among them plastic socialist-era boards with neatly illustrated PE instructions for playing ball.

The school has since been turned into a nursing home, and the heroes of those instructional boards, still blissfully unaware of their own redundancy, are now in Sofia. So I impulsively set them loose in new sports disciplines, with new rules, new faces. But the passing game had to keep a centre, even if we no longer call it that, and even if we are no longer centred enough.

Somewhere between the nostalgic naivety of the past and the magical realism of the future, we found the ball and kept passing it on. From the village gym to the centre of the capital. From children – to the elderly.

Take it and pass it on!

Antoaneta Quick holds a degree in economics and is an artist by desire. She works across different creative fields, guided by the spontaneous delight and the (un)limited possibilities of collage in its many forms. She likes to play with symbols, absurdities, rules and extremes, in search of balance.

In the exhibition “Passing Game with a Centre” at Cryptid Art Space, Antoaneta presents a series of collages made on found boards from the communist era, with visual instructions for playing ball, as a kind of metaphor for juggling time and space.
