“Phases of (sub)consciousness”
An exhibition by Joana Ivanova
November 21 – December 2, 2023
In my practice, I explore the inseparable bond between human beings, nature, the cosmos, human consciousness and imagination, and the objects, forms, situations and creatures that emerge somewhere among them. I believe that every person has a certain purpose in this material existence. Through the choices we make in the different situations life throws at us, we shape our reality. There are many views on the subject, and my own is that a person has the right to an existential choice of their own — to believe or not to believe, to invest in what makes them feel alive.
For my debut solo exhibition, I decided to dig deeper, to turn inward. Through stories, symbols and dreams rendered in felt and paper, I present my own personal world — what stirs my waking mind and (un)conscious subconscious.

* * *
Human life passes through two main phases: waking and sleep. The second of these — sleep — takes up about one third of the time we spend on this planet. A large part of our dreams is tied to what we experience while awake. Contemporary science has still not fully explained the nature, origin or cause of dreams.
The waking state, or the state of conscious awareness as an individual, is present in every person. In it, we develop our sense of self — interests, likes, irritations, growth, escalation, decline, the spiritual, the material, the ego, the alter ego. This process is not linear, it is radically different for everyone, and it continues until the very last active day of consciousness.
