Cryptid Art Space presents

The Freak Show Art Show
/group exhibition/

Concept: Yavor Boyanov

October 19 – 31, 2026

Freak shows took shape as a mass attraction in the 19th century in Europe and the United States, reaching their peak in circuses and fairs. A central figure in this process is Phineas Taylor Barnum, who turned the presentation of people with physical anomalies, unusual looks or exceptional abilities into a lucrative spectacle. For some of the “human phenomena,” it meant a way to make a living, gain fame and find shelter in a world that offered them very few other possibilities; for others, a form of exploitation and humiliation.

In the first half of the 20th century, these shows were still popular, but gradually faded under the influence of medical progress, changing public attitudes and the establishment of human rights. Their contemporary forms usually aim to place the emphasis on voluntary participation and the performers’ individual skills.

Freak shows have left a lasting mark on contemporary pop culture — from the film classic Freaks (1932) to the series Carnivàle (2003) and American Horror Story: Freak Show (2014), which reimagine the theme through the lens of drama, horror and social commentary.

Mateya Arkova – The Bird-Legged Girl

Cryptid Art Space brings the spirit of the strange spectacles of the past into the present. In The Freak Show Art Show, 17 alternative artists take classic archetypes from the world of freak shows — among them the Bearded Woman, the Alligator Man, the Siamese Twins and the Giant — and filter them through their own imagination, style and sensibility. The result is a visual parade of works in different media — painting, graphics, digital drawing, sculpture, photography and more — ranging from stylised and caricature-like to surreal and unnervingly naturalistic.

Participants: Aleksandra Stoyanova, Anton-Konstantin Anastasov, Antonina Georgieva, Veronika Petrova – Ronko, Denumbra, Emil Saparevski, Yoana Ivanova, João Reis, Kalina Yaneva, Margarita Omar, Marina Pasheva, Mateya Arkova, Nadezhda Kostova, Silvia Ilieva, Yavor Boyanov, NxMx and The Magwomb
